This autumn, Prøverommet will travel to a mix of new and long-time collaborators around Bergen. It begins at Bergen inkluderingssenter in Landås, an adult education centre, where participants will present a variety of works across genres. Then the programme moves to Bergen Internasjonale Kultursenter for the first time since 2017, where a mix of freeform performance and music projects will resonate in the space. At Bergen Kjøtt, home of the GRIP technician training initiative, Prøverommet will be a testing space both on-stage and behind-the-scenes. This year’s METEOR festival edition takes place at Visningsrommet USF, with a focus on theatre. Prøverommet concludes at Studio USF, USF Verftet, where BIT’s artist-in-residence in Fjaler will present an excerpt from their new dance piece, alongside other short experiments spanning various artistic fields. What is Prøverommet?

Prøverommet has been running since 1998, originally in BIT’s former venue Teatergarasjen for 10 years, now popping up at various venues throughout the seasons. It’s a low threshold environment to try out new artistic material in front of an audience using any medium: dance, theatre, poetry, visual art, music… The programme is open to participate in and attend, with at least 10 events per year. Almost 2500 projects have been presented so far!

Anyone over 18 years old are welcome to apply, regardless of experience or education. If you would like to participate, please send a short description of your project (contact information below). Alternatively, a meeting or telephone conversation can be arranged.

Note: Remember that presenting new work, experiments and work-in-progress is Prøverommet’s main purpose (hence the name, roughly translated to ‘the rehearsal room/testing space’). Most often, several projects are presented on the same evening. For this reason, it is recommended that durational works are less than 20 minutes (except in exceptional circumstances!). The format is flexible; many events have been combined with workshops, publication launches, various forms of activism and more. Prøverommet provides practical and technical support for the presentation of projects, photo documentation and a small participation fee. There is no budget for travel. Letters of intent are sometimes possible to support participants’ own applications.

Prøverommet is currently working to make its archive accessible on this website. If you wish to have more information about past events, please get in touch. There is an extremely large Excel spreadsheet of all the participants since 1998, posters, and other ephemera to explore!
