A powerful piece of dance and song by Luisa Fernanda Alfonso

In equally huge fascination and frustration, Luisa Fernanda Alfonso embodies and turns around the archetypes of the traditional dances in the classical European ballet, and the popular traditional Mexican music genre Mariachi, with its amorous vocals, strings and brass. Both are characterised for being hyper-dramatic, hyper-virtuous and hyper-gendered. With composer Peter Rubel and an abundance of loudspeakers, Alfonso sings covers of Latin American cheesy oldies such as El Cascabel by Lorenzo Barcelata and Me Estoy Acostumbrando a Ti by Pepe Aguilar, hijacking the dance and song from its legitimacy, legacy and traditions.

Bio

Luisa Fernanda Alfonso is a dancer and choreographer from Bogotá, based in Berlin. She trained at the Limón PSP in New York, holds a B.A. in Dance from Folkwang University, and an M.A. in Solo/Dance/Authorship from HZT Berlin. Grounded in classical and modern dance, she approaches choreography as a carefully orchestrated theatrical apparatus, interwoven with her affinity to making music. Besides Masterpiece, she created A humble concert by a decent woman and currently co-creates a new work with her loved ones: Estefanía Álvarez Ramírez and Peter Rubel. She has performed for Deva Schubert, Armin Hokmi, Leila Hekmat, Xenia Koghilaki, among other artists.
