Regional Collaboration and Development

Bergen Internasjonale Teater and Bergen Kjøtt are collaborating to develop a new regional network dedicated to improving accessibility in the cultural sector. The project aims to ensure that more people can take part in culture – as audiences, artists, and employees.

About the project

This one-year pre-project lays the foundation for a regional network that promotes better accessibility across the cultural field in Vestland. The goal is to share knowledge, experience, and resources among cultural institutions and to identify common solutions for both physical and digital accessibility.

The project is based on the idea that what is necessary for some is good for all. By removing barriers for a few, we open up culture for many.

Why this matters

Many people still face barriers when participating in cultural life – whether as audiences, performers, or staff. Lack of information, physical accessibility, and coordination between organisations make participation difficult for many.

By working collaboratively across institutions, this project seeks to create lasting change. A more inclusive cultural sector is richer, more diverse, and more representative of the society we live in.

Plan

Throughout 2025 and 2026, the project will gather knowledge, identify needs, and build lasting collaborations among regional cultural actors. Through joint workshops and exchange of experience, the network aims to share competence, develop practical tools and resources, and strengthen accessibility efforts across the cultural sector.

This process will lead to a concrete plan for the continuation of the network, including recommendations for structure and follow-up steps.

Digital audience survey about accessibility of cultural life in Vestlandet

We would like to invite everyone who lives in Vestland County and has a disability or is a relative, to participate in a digital survey about accessibility in cultural life in Vestland.

In December 2025 we organised an open workshop in Bergen Kjøtt where people with various disabilities participated and shared their experiences. Now we want to get a broader picture of the situation throughout Vestland County.

(For those of you who participated in the workshop in December: you do not have to answer again)

On December 3, the UN International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we gathered for an important and insightful day with Tilgjengelighetsløftet.

The workshop and celebration at Bergen Kjøtt brought together participants, artists and collaborators from across the region – to share experiences, perspectives and ideas that clearly showed how important our work is for a more accessible and inclusive cultural life.

If you weren’t at the workshop, but live in Vestland and have a disability or you’re a relative, we hope you will contribute by answering our digital survey on accessibility in cultural life.
